Welcome to Miniwatt Auto, where I detail my experience owning one of the few affordable electric vehicles (EVs). I am fascinated by the shift to electric vehicles. I love reading up on them and watching all of the review videos that come out. But while I find it all very entertaining and informative, most of the content around EVs and EV ownership is not actually that relevant to me. The majority of those cars – even the ones that come in around the “average new car” price – are out of my reach. The used market hasn’t been much better, especially when you factor in the tax credit for new cars. On top of that, a lot of the focus is on new features and better tech, and the less flashy but perfectly suitable cars get left out.
So, I thought it might be beneficial to some people out there who are curious about EVs, but who don’t make six figures (or want to go deep into debt for a car), to hear a more realistic and attainable experience. I plan on sharing my thought process and shopping experience leading up to my purchase, sharing some personal ownership stories, providing some updates as I experience new things with my car, and perhaps commenting on some of the developing technology. I anticipate most of the content will strike a middle ground between some of the more basic guides and introductions out there and the deep, technical analysis of voltages, thermal management, etc. Finally, I live in a small town in Central Texas, so some of the information will be specific to that, which I feel is another area rarely covered, since most of the EVs and infrastructure are in California or the East Coast.
